Douthit attended California State University Sacramento from 1982 to 1986, receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film and Television Production. He then attended Columbia College Hollywood in 1989, receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and Television Production.

Douthit started his career as a Production Assistant and Equipment Technician in the film “Crimes of Passion” in 1988. He then worked as the assistant of the producing team for the film “Wedding Party” in 1990, which earned him his first acting credit—following that, Douthit worked as an assistant director on The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.
