In the competitive world of finance, breaking into top-tier firms can be a daunting task for
students. Justin Nelson, a 1998 graduate of Tufts University, has dedicated
himself to easing this transition for his alma mater’s students at JP Morgan.
As a junior at Tufts, Justin Nelson faced the challenge of securing a summer internship in
finance. With no formal resources or recruiting firms on campus, Nelson relied
on personal connections to land an internship as a web developer at JP Morgan
in New York City. Following his graduation, he transitioned into the firm’s
private banking division and rapidly ascended to the position of managing director in asset management.
Understanding the hurdles he once faced, Justin Nelson took the initiative in 2006 to make Tufts a core school for JP
Morgan’s asset management division. This designation meant that the firm would
actively recruit interns and employees from Tufts, offering students more
opportunities in the financial sector.
Initially, Nelson encountered obstacles. Despite lacking financial support from JP Morgan, he
managed travel logistics, gathered résumés, and met with students. His
commitment paid off; within a few years, Tufts was officially recognized as a
core school by JP Morgan in 2009.
One of the beneficiaries of Nelson’s efforts was Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate. During the
economic downturn, Trott secured a summer internship at JP Morgan with Nelson’s
help. He later accepted a full-time position, demonstrating the tangible impact of Nelson’s work.
Today, a robust network of Tufts alumni at JP Morgan assists in recruiting efforts, thanks to
Nelson’s pioneering steps. They participate in résumé screenings, campus
visits, and provide mentorship to current students.
Nelson also contributes to the Tufts Financial Network, participating in Wall Street Crash Courses to educate students about
the finance industry. His efforts have strengthened the bond between Tufts and
JP Morgan, creating pathways for future financial professionals.
Justin Nelson’s dedication is a testament to the power of alumni giving back, ensuring that
Tufts students have the support and opportunities they need to thrive in the
competitive finance landscape. See related link for more information.
