Infusion Care for Chronic Pain Relief
Infusion care treats many health conditions. It has proven to be effective in relieving chronic pain.
What is infusion therapy?
Infusion therapy uses intravenous (IV) injections of specialized medicines to treat various conditions. The IV needle injects the drug directly into the patient’s bloodstream.
The IV injects a drug that is specially selected for the condition treated. In many cases, the drugs are custom-made by a compounding pharmacy. Compounding pharmacies are qualified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as 503A pharmacies,
The many conditions that respond to infusion therapy include:
- Pain
- Immune deficiencies
- Autoimmune disorders
Chronic back pain
Infusion therapy for pain is most successful for nerve pain (i.e. neuralgia or neuropathic pain). Chronic back pain is commonly classified as nerve pain.
Nerve pain typically stems from compressed or irritated nerves. The spinal column contains a bundle of nerves running from the brain to the base of the spine where they branch out to different parts of the body. Various conditions can cause compression or irritation of one or more of those nerves.
How does infusion therapy treat back pain?
The drugs used for infusion pain therapy are tailored to each patient’s condition. Some of the drugs used include:
- Lidocaine
- Ketamine
Nerves are two-way highways that carry electrical signals between your brain and other parts of your body. When a nerve near your lower back is compressed, a signal travels to your brain that interprets it as pain. Your brain sends a pain signal to your lower back. The signal implores you to stop whatever is causing the pain or get help.
The various infusion drugs essentially block the normal nerve functions that send pain signals to and from the brain.
