Hassan Jameel Celebrates J-PAL’s Two Decades of Impact at MIT

Hassan Jameel, vice chairman of Community Jameel, marked a significant milestone by opening the 20th-anniversary celebrations of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The event drew attention to the impressive achievements J-PAL has made in its quest to tackle global poverty.

In his address, Jameel highlighted the lab’s journey from its humble beginnings to touching the lives of over 600 million people worldwide. This milestone was achieved through rigorous evaluations that assess the effectiveness of anti-poverty interventions. Jameel emphasized the importance of partnerships with governments and NGOs, acknowledging the collective efforts that have driven J-PAL’s success.

The collaboration between Community Jameel and J-PAL dates back to its early days when Jameel’s father, inspired by the pioneering work of economists like Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee, decided to lend support. This partnership laid the foundation for J-PAL’s groundbreaking work.

As the global community continues to face challenges such as pandemics and climate change, Jameel stressed the importance of continued support and innovation in poverty alleviation. Community Jameel remains committed to backing J-PAL in its pursuit of impactful initiatives, including the European Social Inclusion Initiative and policy labs in various countries.

Looking forward, Hassan Jameel expressed optimism about future collaborations and the potential to further extend J-PAL’s impact. The anniversary event not only celebrated past accomplishments but also served as a call to action for ongoing efforts to create opportunities for the world’s most vulnerable populations.

As the event concluded, it was clear that Hassan Jameel’s commitment to poverty alleviation, through Community Jameel’s partnership with J-PAL, remains as robust as ever.
