Tom Keane Leading Microsoft´s Push into Space Industry with Developer Tools

The rise of the space industry has led many technology companies to venture into the field and explore new horizons. Microsoft is one such company that has joined forces with others like HPE, NASA, Loft Orbital, Thales Alenia Space, and Ball Aerospace to develop technologies for space applications. Tom Keane, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Azure Global, is leading the company’s efforts into the space industry.

He achieved this by utilizing its platforms and developer tools for on-orbit computing. Microsoft’s AI technology is being utilized to test astronaut equipment on the International Space Station and help come up with new on-orbit climate data applications for Earth observation in partnership with Thales Alenia Space. Tom Keane’s direction has further enabled Microsoft to join hands with Loft Orbital.

This, to develop and test software applications for space systems using Microsoft Azure, which can be deployed to satellites in orbit. This outstanding partnership will provide an easy way to establish software in space and enable new paradigms in remote sensing and on-orbit autonomy. Also, Tom Keane informs, Microsoft is working with Ball Aerospace to demonstrate reconfigurable on-orbit processing technologies using Azure Cloud via a series of on-orbit testbed satellites.

Tom Keane on Public Cloud Development

Microsoft has collaborated with Orbital Insight, Blackshark.ai, and Esri for geospatial intelligence and remote sensing AI. Through Azure Synapse Analytics, Blackshark.ai’s end-to-end geospatial platform. Tom Keane informs that these, including the Orca analytics service.

This service is based on satellite or aerial imagery, and is available for disaster relief planning and mapping services. Microsoft’s efforts will enable Azure to accommodate customer-owned imagery and API for imagery needs and allow customers to bring their own trained models (Crunchbase).

Cloud services engineer Tom Keane’s vision has led Microsoft’s foray into the space industry using developer tools. Seeing how these initiatives will pave the way for new technological advancements that will benefit our planet is exciting. It shows that with determination and smart partnerships, companies can enter new frontiers and explore new opportunities in the technology field.
