Happy Joe’s has been around for nearly 60 years, and today they have 130 stores nationwide, most of them across America. They specialize in deep dish pizza, a thin crust dough traditionally cooked on an upside-down pizza pan with pre-cooked toppings on top instead of mozzarella cheese or dough like regular pizzas.
The outstanding and successful Happy Joe’s American Pizza Parlor was founded in 1957 in Chicago by Joe Garufi and his wife. In 1957, Joe’s only made one type of pizza: the original thick-crust pizza. In the 70s, he bought a deep-dish pizza pan, the first of its kind. Then they started making different types of pizzas.
They made them with thicker dough than before, which is why they called them deep dishes. They also included grilled sandwiches. In 1972 three more Happy Joe’s were built in Northern Indiana, including one on US 31/33 at National Ave (Milwaukee), one on M-114 at E 141st St (Niles).
Also, another one on M-129 at Wagon Wheel Rd (Michigan City). Happy Joe’s offers a variety of different types of pizza for customers to choose from. They have both regular and deep dishes and specialty pizzas such as veggie, Sicilian, Hawaiian, pesto, and more. The specialty pizza options include pepperoni, sausage, chicken parmigiana, and more, all with a variety of toppings to go with them.
